Every birth story is unique — and every birth deserves respect. Yet despite how common Cesarean births are, they’re still surrounded by outdated myths and misinformation. At Meadows Women’s Center, we’re shining a light on the truth, because informed care is empowered care.
Let’s break down five of the most common C-section myths.
Myth 1: “If I have a C-section, I can never have a vaginal birth again.”
Fact: Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC) is not only possible — it’s safe for many people. Whether VBAC is right for you depends on factors like your incision type, pregnancy history, and overall health. With proper guidance and monitoring, many families go on to have healthy vaginal deliveries after a C-section.
Myth 2: “I won’t be able to bond with my baby after a C-section.”
Fact: Bonding doesn’t come down to one moment — it’s a journey made up of skin-to-skin cuddles, breastfeeding, talking, and love. A Cesarean does not prevent emotional closeness. Connection begins with care and presence, no matter how your baby arrives.
Myth 3: “I can only have one C-section.”
Fact: Many people safely have multiple Cesarean births. While the risks can increase slightly with each surgery, proper medical care and regular monitoring help ensure safety for both parent and baby. Every case is unique, and decisions should be made alongside a trusted healthcare provider.
Myth 4: “I won’t be able to breastfeed after a C-section.”
Fact: You absolutely can! Breastfeeding after a Cesarean might require some adjustments — like finding a comfortable position while healing — but it’s entirely possible. With support and patience, many new parents successfully breastfeed after surgery.
Myth 5: “You’re not really giving birth if it’s a C-section.”
Fact: Let’s be clear: birth is birth. Whether your baby is born through your belly or your birth canal, you brought life into the world. There is no “less than” in how a child is delivered — only strength, sacrifice, and love.
